What to expect from puppy classes (and why they’re not just about obedience)

If you’ve been thinking about joining puppy classes but feel unsure about whether they’re right for you or your puppy, you’re not alone.

Many owners worry their puppy won’t behave well enough, will be too excitable or nervous, or that they themselves won’t know what to do. But puppy classes aren’t about having a “good” puppy - the idea is that the foundation of the classes themselves help build strong foundations from the very beginning.

With my puppy classes starting on 28th March in South London, I wanted to explain exactly what you can expect when you join.

Puppy classes aren’t just about obedience

When people imagine puppy training, they often picture rows of perfectly sitting dogs or puppies looking adoringly up to their owner in a perfect heel position. Real puppy training looks very different.

Yes these things can be great, and there’s no doubt obedience is important and covered. But early training is more about helping puppies feel safe, confident and able to cope with the world around them. Rather than focusing on strict obedience alone, we work on calm behaviour, emotional development and communication between you and your puppy, because confidence and understanding adds so much more to your daily lives together going foward.

A calm learning environment

One of the biggest concerns owners have is whether their puppy will feel overwhelmed and nervous, or too excited and boisterous.

Classes are carefully structured to keep arousal levels low and learning achievable. Puppies aren’t expected to interact constantly or play freely throughout the session. Instead, they learn to feel comfortable around other dogs while staying relaxed and focused on their owner. This helps prevent overstimulation and supports better long-term behaviour.

Support for guardians as well as puppies

Puppy training is just as much about supporting you as it is about teaching your dog.

You’ll learn how to read your puppy’s body language, understand what their behaviour is communicating, and feel more confident handling everyday situations at home and out in the world. There’s space to ask questions, learn at your own pace, and build skills gradually week by week. You’ll also have the support of my Whatsapp group for you, the other classmates and myself to help guide you in between sessions.

You don’t need a perfect puppy to start

Some puppies arrive confident and curious. Others are quieter or easily distracted. Both are completely normal. The classes are designed to meet puppies where they are, helping each one develop confidence and calm behaviour without pressure or comparison. All you need is a puppy and a willingness to learn together (and a small choice of goodies from the shopping list I’ll provide!).
