Training your dog? You might need to hear this.
Hi! I’m Alex, a dog trainer based in Streatham, south London, running 1-2-1 training sessions for dogs and their guardians.
I’ve noticed so much recently that people are so quick to berate themselves or label themselves as ‘failing’ with their dog training - people that have such good intentions with their dogs and their progression - people that are trying to stick to training schedules and plans.
If that’s you, you’re already ahead of the game because your intentions are what matter the most - you’ll know if you’re trying your best and being a good guardian to your dog. With that in mind please just give yourself some credit, however much it may seem like progress might not be happening. You are not failing. You are trying your best.
If you have a good training plan in place stick with it. If you don’t and need some help, check out if I can give you some support here.
I’m not sure why it crossed my mind but I love these lyrics from ‘Everybody’s Free’ by Baz Luhrmann and think they sum my point up quite nicely:
“Don’t waste your time on jealousy; sometimes you’re ahead; sometimes you’re behind; the race is long, and in the end it’s only with yourself.
Remember compliments you receive; forget the insults. If you succeed in doing this, tell me how.
Whatever you do, don’t congratulate yourself too much or berate yourself either.”
